Introductory Number Theory

A term on number theory—divisibility, factors, and remainders, and what they reveal about a number.

Course overview

  • Homework: 60 minutes a week
  • Prerequisite: Math Olympiad 7, or placement

What you’ll learn

Fluency

Mental Math

Divisibility and remainders read straight off the digits, least common multiple and greatest common divisor on sight, and the exponent laws.

Skill

Skill Builder

The full set of divisibility tests, GCF and LCM for composites and for powers, and prime factorization used as a working tool rather than a definition.

Strategy

Problem Solving

Counting a number’s factors and summing them, factorials and primes, the relationship between LCM and GCD, and reasoning entirely in remainders.
